David Smith at the Art Squall

Thursday, November 27th, 2014

Having recently relocated to Ramsgate, Kent, I was delighted to finally enjoy the annual Art Squall this summer. Its various offerings included the smallest theatre in the world, which my children found hilarious, a ukulele jukebox and local artists open studios. However what really caught my eye was the exhibition by artist David Smith whose repetitive drawings and paintings reminded me of sketches I used to make back at art school.  His text spoke of seeking a tension between order and chaos, I think when you make very ordered work by hand you have to accept the element of imperfection and chaos that is unavoidable and I felt these works sat very poetically on the border line.  They got me excited about drawing again and I hope to post some of my new sketches soon.

I was simply transfixed when I came across this interactive light installation by creative collective rAndom international. Such a shame it was only on display in Switzerland…

Kit Webster is a new media installation artist and composer from Melbourne, Australia.  His videos show incredible light and sound shows that play with perspective and illusion.  My personal favourite is Enigmatica shown below.  Check out more of his work on his website and on Vimeo.
